Haute-Corse, French administrative department in northern Corsica, France
Haute-Corse is a French administrative department in northern Corsica situated between mountains and the Mediterranean Sea. The territory encompasses three distinct geographic areas: the Cap Corse peninsula, the coastal Balagne region, and the Castagniccia highlands.
This department came into being in 1976 when Corsica was divided into two administrative regions. Bastia was designated as the capital of the northern section and remains its largest urban center.
The region preserves Corsican traditions through regular festivals, local markets, and regional products like chestnut flour and citrus fruits. These goods shape daily life in villages and weekly markets.
The territory connects to mainland France through Bastia's port and airport facilities. An extensive network of roads links mountain villages to coastal towns, making all parts accessible by car.
A large portion of the Regional Natural Park of Corsica protects rare plant species and provides marked hiking paths through mountain terrain. These trails connect remote mountain villages and allow visitors to explore undeveloped countryside.
