Montrouge is a town in the Hauts-de-Seine department that sits along the southern border of Paris and covers a densely built area. Residential buildings, shops, and small parks line the streets that run between the neighborhoods.
The place has been mentioned in monastery records since the 12th century and developed for a long time as a rural suburb. During the 19th century, many quarries opened here and supplied material for the expansion of Paris.
The theater Les Lucioles presents performances and workshops for all ages, drawing families from the surrounding area. Local markets along the main streets offer fresh produce and create meeting points for the neighborhood.
Metro lines 4 and 13 connect the town to the Parisian network, and several bus lines cross the streets. Most areas are easy to reach on foot, and shops and restaurants are spread across the neighborhoods.
Pablo Picasso worked here between 1916 and 1918 in a workshop and created many works during that period. The underground passages of the old quarries still run beneath several streets.
