2nd Foreign Parachute Regiment, Elite parachute regiment in Calvi, France
The 2nd Foreign Parachute Regiment conducts airborne operations from its Camp Raffalli base and uses specialized vehicles along with modern military equipment for rapid deployment missions. The force consists of several units, each focused on different types of operations such as urban combat, mountain missions, or amphibious tasks.
The regiment was founded in 1948 and took part in numerous military operations, including deployments in Indochina, Algeria, and later in Afghanistan and Mali. This decades-long operational history shaped the unit and its role within the French armed forces.
The members of this unit wear different headgear depending on their rank: officers put on black kepis with red tops, while enlisted troops wear the classic white kepi of the legion. This tradition of different headgear makes the rank structure visible at a glance and connects the unit with the long history of the Foreign Legion.
The military facility is not open to the public but can be observed from the outside when staying in the Calvi area. Visitors interested in military history can find information at local museums or through conversations with residents familiar with the presence of the legion.
The unit operates an amphibious center and a mountain post at Col de Vergio, along with several firing ranges spread across Corsica for different training scenarios. These widely scattered facilities allow training under the most varied conditions and make the island an important location for specialized instruction.
