Bagnères-de-Bigorre, Thermal spa town in Hautes-Pyrénées, France.
Bagnères-de-Bigorre is a commune at 550 meters elevation in southwestern France, surrounded by Pyrenees slopes and natural springs. Streets wind between older spa buildings and residential quarters, while several parks run along small watercourses.
During antiquity the settlement was called Vicus Aquensis and developed around thermal springs that attracted Roman settlers who built the first public baths. In the 19th century the spa town grew with the railway connection and attracted wealthy guests from across Europe.
The town takes its name from the warm springs in the Bigorre valley that still draw visitors today. Locals traditionally gather at the fountain installations in the center where mineral water is freely available.
The Aquensis tourist office provides visitor information about thermal treatments, hiking trails and accommodations throughout all seasons. Most public facilities are within walking distance of the town center and accessible via flat or gently sloping streets.
The Grands Thermes complex was built with local Pyrenees marble and offers specialized therapeutic water treatments from natural mountain springs. In the older bathhouses original marble tubs and tiles from the late 19th century are still visible.
