Château Léoville Barton, Second Growth wine estate in Saint-Julien, France
Château Léoville Barton is a wine estate in Saint-Julien, in the Médoc wine region of southwestern France. The vineyards sit on gravelly soil with clay subsoil and are planted with Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Cabernet Franc.
The estate was carved out of the larger Léoville property and bought by Hugh Barton in 1826. It was ranked as a Second Growth in the 1855 Bordeaux classification and has kept that standing ever since.
Wine at Léoville Barton is made following classical Bordeaux methods, with fermentation in wooden vats and aging in oak barrels. Visitors who tour the cellars can see these traditional practices still in use today.
The estate is open to visitors and offers guided tours that explain how the wine is made. It is a good idea to book in advance, as availability can be limited.
Despite its well-known name, there is no actual château building on the estate. The property shares its facilities with the neighboring Château Langoa-Barton, which also belongs to the Barton family.
