Aspe Valley, Mountain valley in Pyrénées-Atlantiques, France
Aspe Valley is a mountain valley in the Pyrenees that extends from lower elevations to the Spanish border, connecting thirteen French communes. The Gave d'Aspe river runs through it, shaping the landscape with its banks and surrounding mountain slopes.
The valley was long part of the independent principality of Béarn until it merged with the French kingdom in the 17th century. This union brought new administrative structures and marked the end of regional independence.
The valley's communities have maintained their own way of life through generations, with local traditions and crafts still visible in the villages today. The people here continue to practice regional customs as part of their daily routines.
Two well-known walking routes cross the valley and connect it with other mountain regions and religious pilgrimage destinations. Along the way, walkers find accommodations and mountain refuges needed for longer hiking trips.
A special moment for visitors is the chance to spot the last wild bears of the region living in the forests and mountain ridges. These rare encounters remind us that the valley remains a true wilderness area.
