Canteleu, commune in Seine-Maritime, France
Canteleu is a commune in the Seine-Maritime department, located on the western edge of Rouen on a plateau overlooking the Seine valley. The town is part of the Rouen urban area and sits between residential neighborhoods and the Roumare Forest, which runs along its northern boundary.
Canteleu developed from a farming settlement into a suburb of Rouen over several centuries, growing more rapidly after road and transport links with the city improved in the 19th and 20th centuries. A few old farm buildings and small chapels that remain in the town show traces of that earlier rural life.
The name Canteleu likely comes from an old expression meaning the place where wolves howl, which reflects how wild and forested the area once was. Today, visitors can still feel this connection to nature by walking along the edges of the Roumare Forest, which directly borders the town.
Canteleu is well connected to central Rouen by public bus lines and is easy to reach by car from the city. Once in town, most areas and the forest edges are accessible on foot, though a bicycle is helpful for covering more ground.
Canteleu was once a retreat for wealthy Rouen families who built country houses there in the 19th century to escape the noise of the city. A few of these old villas can still be spotted along the quieter streets of the town today.
