Château Rieussec, Premier Cru Classé winery in Sauternes, France.
Château Rieussec is a winery in Sauternes with about 93 hectares of vineyards on clay and sandy soils, located directly next to the famous Château d'Yquem in the Bordeaux region. The estate produces four distinct wines: Château Rieussec, Carmes de Rieussec, Château de Cosse, and the dry white wine R de Rieussec.
The property originated as land owned by Carmelite monks before being confiscated during the French Revolution and sold at auction in 1790. This transition from religious to private ownership shaped the estate's later development.
The vineyard follows traditional Sauternes methods where grapes are selectively picked over multiple weeks to reach proper ripeness. The way work happens here shapes the daily rhythm of the estate and defines how the harvest unfolds.
Plan your visit for milder weather days since you will spend much time outdoors walking among the vines. Wear good footwear as the paths through the vineyards can be uneven and muddy.
Each vine here produces remarkably little wine: about one glass instead of the standard bottle per vine. This low yield results from the structure of the grapes and the production process for the sweet wine.
