Unité d'habitation, Modernist residential complex in Marseille, France
The reinforced concrete structure rises 56 meters high with 337 apartments spread across 12 floors, featuring double-height living spaces and interlocking residential units.
Le Corbusier constructed this residential building between 1947 and 1952 to address the severe housing shortage following World War II in Marseille.
The structure established a new model for collective housing by incorporating shops, medical facilities, and educational spaces within a single vertical community.
The building contains two shopping streets, a hotel, medical facilities, and a rooftop terrace equipped with a running track and communal gathering spaces.
Each apartment spans the entire width of the building, allowing natural light from both sides while reducing corridor space to one level every three floors.
