The Museum of Contemporary Art in Marseille houses roughly 800 works ranging from the second half of the twentieth century to today, covering various artistic movements. The museum opened in 1994 under the direction of Bernard Blistène. From 2019 it closed for renovation ahead of Marseille hosting Manifesta 13, with reopening planned for April 2023. Nathalie Ergino, director from 2001 to 2005, saw it gain national museum status and created a project room for young artists.
