Fort de la Redoute Ruinée

Fort de la Redoute Ruinée is a mountain fort located at approximately 2,383 meters elevation in the heights above La Rosière resort in the Savoie region. The structure occupies a strategic position overlooking the Alpine landscape and the pass crossings below.

The fort was constructed in 1892 as part of France's Alpine defense system to guard mountain passes along the Italian border. It saw significant military action during the early 1940s when Alpine warfare took place in this region.

You can reach the fort by taking the Roches Noires Express chairlift to Roc Noir, then hiking approximately 40 minutes to reach the structure. Bring weather-resistant clothing and sturdy hiking boots since conditions at this altitude change quickly.

After military operations in 1940, the fort's commanding officer departed under ceremonial circumstances involving Italian Alpine troops who came to pay respects. This encounter between opposing forces represented a moment of military courtesy during wartime.
