Arc-en-Ciel funicular, railway line in France
The Arc-en-Ciel funicular in Bourg-Saint-Maurice connects the town to the Arc 1600 ski area on a track roughly 885 meters long. The modern cable railway with large glass windows climbs a slope of up to 40 percent and completes the journey in about seven minutes.
The funicular opened in 1989 and replaced a smaller cable car that operated from 1974 to 1988. This project was important for developing the tourism area and required three years of construction including multiple bridges over difficult terrain.
The Bourg-Saint-Maurice station has a large parking lot nearby, making it simple to park and access the funicular. Service runs regularly with departures roughly every twenty minutes during the busy winter season, so waiting times are short.
The cabins have been modernized with full glass paneling so passengers can look outside from every angle. In 2010 and 2018 the cable and control systems were upgraded to improve reliability and safety during operations.
