Terra Amata, Prehistoric archaeological site at Mont Boron, France.
Terra Amata is a prehistoric site at Mont Boron in Nice. The excavated area sits on a fossilized beach terrace above today's sea level.
Construction near the harbor exposed the site in 1966, leading a research team to examine the remains. The findings document use tens of thousands of centuries ago.
The place shows traces of simple shelters where people lit fires on the beach and worked with stone. Visitors can see how they prepared food and protected themselves from the wind.
The museum opens daily except Mondays and holidays for visitors. Talks on human development take place between November and April.
The site ranks among the oldest known records of fire use in Europe. Charcoal remains show that people here actively controlled flames.
