Tour de la Babotte, Medieval tower and astronomical observatory in Montpellier, France

Tour de la Babotte is a stone tower with an observation platform located at the edge of Montpellier's historic center. It rises approximately 26 meters and was originally built as a defensive fortification.

The original defensive fortification dates from the 12th century and was converted into a scientific observation post in the mid-18th century. This transformation reflects the shift that swept through the city during the Age of Enlightenment.

The tower served as a gathering place where scholars studied the heavens and shared their discoveries. This scientific work shaped the city's identity as a center of learning and intellectual exchange.

The tower is located on Boulevard de l'Observatoire, a quiet area with access to nearby pathways and green spaces. Comfortable shoes are recommended, especially if you plan to climb the interior stairs.

The tower once housed an early communication system that enabled rapid message transmission across long distances. This visual signaling network operated between stations and was a precursor to modern technology.
