Pont basculant de la Seyne-sur-Mer, Railway lift bridge in La Seyne-sur-Mer, France
The Pont basculant de la Seyne-sur-Mer is a railway bridge with a vertical lift mechanism spanning about 40 meters to connect the train station with former shipyards. The steel structure was engineered to raise and lower, allowing ships to pass underneath.
Designed by the Daydé company, the bridge opened in 1920 to connect trains from the station to the shipyards by the sea. It was crucial for moving materials and workers to one of the region's most important industries.
The bridge reflects the shipbuilding importance that once defined this port town. Walking around it, you can see exhibitions that explain how the lifting machinery worked and why it mattered for the factories nearby.
The best way to view the bridge is to visit during the cooler months when the observation area is open on weekdays. Plan your visit for morning hours when fewer crowds gather at the site.
At night, the bridge is lit with LED lights visible from across the harbor, adding a modern glow to this older industrial structure. This lighting transforms the aging infrastructure into a different kind of landmark after dark.

The port city of Toulon on the French Mediterranean coast offers numerous subjects for photographers. The historic city centre displays buildings from the 17th and 18th centuries, including the Sainte-Marie-Majeure Cathedral and the town hall with its atlantes by Pierre Puget. The military harbour, one of France's main naval bases, presents warships and submarines. Mont Faron rises 584 metres above the city and provides views across the Toulon roadstead and coastline. The cable car leads to the summit, where the Memorial du débarquement en Provence is located. At the foot of the mountain lies the Mourillon district with its sandy beach and colourful facades along the promenade. The Cours Lafayette market takes place daily and showcases the region's Mediterranean produce. The Toulon Opera House, built in the 19th century, ranks among the largest opera houses in France outside Paris. The old harbour Darse Vieille displays fishing boats and yachts against the backdrop of limestone cliffs.
