Abbaye d'Entremont, Medieval abbey in Glières-Val-de-Borne, France.
Abbaye d'Entremont is a medieval monastery with a stone church topped by a square bell tower positioned on the south side beside the choir. The rectangular building displays typical medieval construction with thick walls and pointed arch windows.
Founded in 1154 by Augustinian monks, this monastery controlled passage between valleys for centuries in the mountain region. Its role ended during secularization when it closed in 1776.
The choir houses 15th-century wooden stalls and a decorated altarpiece from 1685, showing skilled religious craftsmanship from different eras. These works reveal how artisans at this place maintained their traditions over many centuries.
The monastery opens for religious services and guided visits from July through mid-September and requires advance booking. Contact the local municipality before your visit to arrange a tour and confirm current access.
Archaeological digs starting in 2015 uncovered four buildings and two graves beneath 20th-century rubble at the site. These findings show that the complex once extended far beyond the standing church with numerous outbuildings and structures.
