Cimade, French non-governmental organisation
Cimade is a support organization in France that works with migrants, refugees, and undocumented people. It operates through a network of 98 local groups across 13 regions, with main offices coordinating activities in large cities.
Cimade began in the 1930s when French students started living in internment camps to support displaced people. During World War II, the group hid Jews and helped them escape to safer countries like Spain and Switzerland.
Cimade was founded by young Protestants who chose to live directly in camps alongside displaced people rather than offering aid from a distance. This commitment to shared daily life and presence remains central to how the organization approaches support today.
The organization has regional offices throughout France where visitors and interested people can gather information and connect with local projects. Each department offers different support services and has staff available to answer questions or discuss involvement.
Cimade organizes a series of events called Migrant'scène each November and December, where people gather for talks and exchanges about migration. These weeks create space for dialogue between the organization and the public about how policies affect daily life.
