This cemetery was established in 1851 to replace an earlier burial ground and later grew through purchases of surrounding farmland. The expansion between 1875 and 1915 reflects how the city developed during that period.

The main entrance is at Rue Eugene Landoas and leads to well-organized sections that are easy to navigate. Visitors can walk the paths between graves and either explore on their own or join organized tours of the grounds.
Former French President René Coty rests here among about 20,000 burials. Also interred are labor activist Jules Durand and aviation pioneer Hubert Latham, showing the range of lives that came together at this site.
