Galibier-Thabor, Alpine ski area in Maurienne Valley, France
Galibier-Thabor is a ski area straddling the villages of Valmeinier and Valloire in the Maurienne valley of the French Alps. Its runs go from mid-mountain to high-altitude terrain and are served by a network of ski lifts connecting the two sides.
Valmeinier and Valloire were originally separate mountain villages that were gradually developed for winter sports during the 20th century. As the lift infrastructure grew, the two resorts were eventually linked into a single ski area.
The ski domain hosts international ice and snow sculpture competitions each January, with artists creating temporary installations across the resort. These artistic works reflect how the region blends mountain traditions with contemporary creative expression.
The area has runs for beginners and more experienced skiers, so it works for different levels in the same group. Since the terrain is split across two villages, it helps to check which side you are starting from before heading out.
The ski area takes its name from the Col du Galibier, one of the most famous mountain passes in the Tour de France, which sits just above the slopes. In summer the pass opens to cyclists who come to ride the same road the race has used for over a century.
