Valmeinier, commune in Savoie, France

Valmeinier is a small village in the Savoie mountains, extending across two elevation levels with the lower area at around 1500 meters (4,900 feet) and the upper section at 1800 meters (5,900 feet). The setting features traditional stone and wooden buildings, mountain slopes with meadows and forests, plus modern ski facilities and hotels that serve visitors throughout the year.

Valmeinier began as a mining settlement when locals started extracting high-quality anthracite in the 17th century, giving the place its name 'Val des mines.' From a significant mining and farming community, it transformed starting in the 1960s when traditional mining stopped and population declined, until the construction of the first ski lift in 1973 converted it into a winter sports destination.

The name Valmeinier comes from its mining past, derived from 'Val des mines' meaning 'Valley of the mines,' when locals extracted anthracite from the mountains. Walking through the village today, you still see traditional stone houses and old farms that reflect this heritage and give the place its simple, timeless character.

The village is easy to explore on foot since it is compact, with signs pointing to hiking trails and local shops. The best time to visit depends on your interests: winter offers skiing on the slopes and in the snowpark, while summer months are ideal for hiking and exploring the mountain meadows.

The resort features one of France's well-regarded snowparks with tricks and jumps for snowboarders and skiers, maintained daily to ensure top safety standards. This specialized terrain makes the place a draw for freestyle athletes from across Europe.
