The facility was established in 1923, replacing an earlier morgue on Île de la Cité that operated as a public viewing space for unidentified bodies until 1907. The move to the new location allowed for more modern methods and additional space to handle the expanding work of forensic medicine.

The institute performs approximately 2,000 autopsies annually, contributing to criminal investigations and medical research while serving the Paris metropolitan region.

Access to the facility is strictly limited as it is a specialized workplace with security protocols in place. Visits are possible only in official contexts and with special authorization.

The building was designed by architect Albert Tournaire and stands close to Quai de la Rapée along the Seine River. This location provides efficient connections to police departments and hospitals across the city.
