Lac d'Estaing, Mountain lake in Hautes-Pyrénées, France.
Lac d'Estaing is a mountain lake in the Hautes-Pyrénées, nestled in a narrow valley surrounded by steep rocky slopes. The water appears dark and still, as the lake reaches considerable depth in places and has very little vegetation along its shores.
The lake served as a water source for Pyrenean shepherds over many centuries as they moved their flocks through the high mountain terrain. Its outflow feeds into the Gave de Labat de Bun river, which has shaped the valleys of this part of the range.
The lake sits along the GR10 long-distance trail, which crosses the Pyrenees from the Atlantic to the Mediterranean. In summer, hikers often stop here to rest before heading toward the surrounding peaks.
A campground right beside the lake is open during the summer months and works as a starting point for trails into the surrounding mountains. Access is easiest from June through September, when the mountain paths are generally free of snow.
The lake is home to a small group of little grebes, water birds that nest along the sheltered shoreline and are rarely spotted by passing hikers. Their calls carry clearly across the water in the early morning, often before the birds themselves come into view.
