Ouvrage Schiesseck, Military fortification near Bitche, France.
Ouvrage Schiesseck is an underground military fort near Bitche containing eleven combat blocks connected by tunnels. These blocks hold gun turrets, ammunition stores, and power generators that allowed the fort to operate independently.
This fortress was built between 1929 and 1932 as part of the Maginot Line to defend the French border. It served for just over a decade before German forces took control in 1940.
The fortress shows how military engineers designed living and fighting spaces underground during the 1930s. Walking through the tunnels, you can see how soldiers worked and rested in these cramped, enclosed chambers.
Entry to the fort is through two main access points that lead into different sections. Visitors should be prepared to move through narrow passages and areas with low ceilings.
Different blocks held different types of guns, from smaller cannons in some turrets to larger guns in others. This mix allowed defenders to shoot at targets both near and far from the fort.
