Moucherotte, Mountain summit in Isère, France
Moucherotte is a limestone summit in the Alps that marks the northern edge of the Vercors massif and rises above the Grenoble valley. The mountain can be reached by various hiking paths and offers views across the surrounding alpine landscape from the top.
Mid-20th century saw the construction of a hotel and cable car system on the mountain, though these facilities operated only briefly before closing. This period marked an attempt to develop the site as a tourism destination in the postwar years.
The summit area hosted ski jumping competitions during the 1968 Winter Olympics, with a 90-meter springboard that remains on the northern slopes.
The ascent to the summit is possible via several hiking routes starting from nearby villages and passing through forests and open ridges. Visitors should bring waterproof clothing and sturdy footwear, as conditions at the top can be harsh.
Remnants of sports facilities from a major 20th-century winter sports event still dot the mountainside. These abandoned structures tell the story of the mountain's brief role in international athletics.
