Porte des Lilas, city gate of Paris
Porte des Lilas was a city gate in Paris located at the boundary between the 19th and 20th arrondissements. The gate stood as part of the fortification system that encircled the city during the 1800s.
The gate was built as part of the Thiers fortification line that encircled Paris in the mid-1800s. It was demolished in the early 1900s when the fortifications were no longer needed.
Since the gate no longer exists, visitors can only explore the history at its former location. A walk through the neighborhood reveals the modern cityscape that replaced the old fortifications.
