Rochers de la Balme

Rochers de la Balme is a mountain summit in the Vercors massif featuring distinctive rock formations typical of the Dauphiné Prealps. The terrain shows steep slopes and exposed rock layers that reveal the geological structure of the region.

During World War II, the location served as a strategic observation point for resistance movements in the Vercors region. The elevated position allowed fighters to monitor military activities and gather intelligence.

Local hiking groups maintain Alpine traditions by regularly organizing collective expeditions to reach the mountain peak.

Reaching the summit requires good fitness and takes several hours with significant elevation gain. Hikers should bring proper equipment and check weather conditions, as conditions can change rapidly in the mountains.

Near the summit stands a mountain cabin called Serre du Play that offers shelter to hikers during harsh weather. This simple refuge serves as a crucial stopover for those caught by sudden weather changes in the mountains.
