La Grande Moucherolle, Mountain summit in Vercors Massif, France
La Grande Moucherolle is a limestone peak in the Vercors Massif that rises to 2,285 meters above sea level and overlooks the Vercors Regional Nature Park. Its profile is marked by steep rock faces that appear particularly striking when viewed from the north.
The mountain formed during the Alpine orogeny millions of years ago, when tectonic forces lifted and shaped the limestone masses. Its geological form reveals the power of these mountain-building processes that shaped the entire region.
Local climbers have used this peak as a training ground and destination for generations of mountain expeditions. The various routes across its slopes reflect how people here test their skills in demanding alpine terrain.
The ascent begins from the Clot de la Balme parking area near Corrençon-en-Vercors and proceeds over sections of varying steepness to reach the summit. The best climbing season runs from June through September, when snow cover is minimal and conditions are safest.
A natural passage called Pas de la Fenetre at approximately 1,800 meters marks the shift from forest zone into rocky summit terrain. Many mountaineers use this distinctive passage as a natural reference point and it provides an interesting change in perspective.
