Refuge du Nid d'Aigle, refuge de montagne en France
Refuge du Nid d'Aigle is a mountain hut in the French Alps positioned just below Mont Blanc with a rounded shape that fits naturally into the mountain landscape. It sits near the Mont Blanc Tramway station and contains simple dormitories, food service, and an outdoor terrace overlooking the Bionnassay glacier.
The hut was built long ago to support climbers attempting Mont Blanc and exploring the surrounding mountains. Over time it became a known stopping point on the region's famous mountain routes.
The name references an eagle's nest, reflecting its high mountain location. Visitors experience a straightforward mountain culture where people gather to share stories and meals in simple surroundings.
Visitors can reach the hut on foot via a difficult trail from Bionnassay or Le Crozat parking areas with climbing passages, or use the tramway system if reservations are made in advance. Bring maps, weather-appropriate gear, and plenty of water, as the route is demanding and the altitude exceeds 2,400 meters (7,900 feet).
On clear mornings visitors can spot ibex on the glacier moraine, a rare chance to see wild mountain goats in their natural habitat. These animals are adapted to extreme altitudes and often appear in the early hours after sunrise.
