Municipal Theatre of Chartres, Theatre building in Chartres, France.
The Municipal Theatre of Chartres is a theatre building in the city featuring a main hall organized across four levels: stalls, pit, first gallery, and second gallery. The hall seats roughly 570 spectators and sits at Place de Ravenne along Boulevard Adelphe-Chasles.
The building opened on April 28, 1861, providing the city with a dedicated theatre after performances had taken place in Saint-Foy Church between 1797 and 1857. This new venue marked a shift toward a purpose-built performance space.
The venue has long served as a gathering place where residents and visitors experience theatre, music, and comedy throughout the year. It remains a central meeting point for the community to share performances together.
The building sits centrally at Place de Ravenne and is easy to reach on foot from downtown. It has been managed by the Entracte association since 2012 and offers regular programming throughout the year.
The exterior features flamed brick facades and double-flight stairways that give the building distinctive character. Inside, the layout follows Italian theatre design principles to create superior sound quality for performances.
