Grès à Reptiles, Fossil site in Var, France
Grès à Reptiles is a geological formation in Var made up of layers of clay, sandstone, and shale spread across southern France. These layers are roughly 40 meters thick and were created during the Cretaceous period.
This geological formation dates from roughly 74 to 70 million years ago during the early Maastrichtian period of the Cretaceous era. Scientists identified it while studying the geological history of southern France.
The formation contains fossils of dinosaur species such as Arcovenator and Matheronodon that help scientists understand how these animals lived in southern France during ancient times.
The site is located in the Aix-en-Provence Basin where the layers are exposed and can be studied in the field. Visitors should expect uneven ground and wear appropriate footwear for exploring the rocky terrain.
Fossil eggs from the Megaloolithus genus have been found here, showing that dinosaurs used this area as a breeding ground. Such discoveries are uncommon and make this location important for understanding ancient nesting behavior.
