Baou des Noirs

Baou des Noirs is a limestone summit rising 677 meters, marked by steep cliffs and a distinctive flat top characteristic of formations in the Castellane Prealps. The exposed rock face reveals the geological layering that defines this highland landscape.

The formation took its name from the Black Penitents, a religious brotherhood that conducted annual processions to the summit during the 13th century. This medieval connection established the landmark's enduring local identity.

The summit belongs to a group of four limestone plateaus circling Vence, with its name rooted in a local brotherhood that gathered here for rituals. These formations shape how residents understand their landscape and the geological identity of this part of the Alpes.

A marked trail of about 8 kilometers leads from Vence to the summit, ascending roughly 400 meters through rocky terrain with various exposed sections. Sturdy footwear and adequate water are essential for this hike.

From the peak, visitors look out across Mediterranean landscapes extending from Cap Ferrat to the Esterel mountains, viewing multiple geological plateaus in a single sweep. This panorama offers an unusual blend of coastal and alpine vistas.
