Vence, Medieval commune in Alpes-Maritimes, France

Vence is a medieval commune in the Alpes-Maritimes region north of Nice, sitting at 322 meters in elevation. Stone walls and historic gates encircle its central district, creating the framework of the old town.

The cathedral of Vence was built on the site of a former Roman temple and contains facade stones from 239 AD. The structure served as a religious center throughout the centuries for the surrounding area.

The Chapelle du Rosaire features stained glass windows and wall paintings created by French artist Henri Matisse in 1951 specifically for this religious space. The artist merged his modern design approach with the spiritual purpose of the chapel.

The town features multiple public fountains throughout the year that distribute fresh spring water, offering visitors easy access to drinking water. These fountains are scattered across different spots in the town center.

An ash tree presented by King Francis I and planted in 1538 continues to grow within the town boundaries, showing the place's historical royal connections. The tree stands as a living monument from another era.
