Le Grand Manti is a mountain summit in the Chartreuse massif, rising to 1818 meters above sea level. The peak features limestone rock formations and is accessed by several established hiking trails that converge toward the top.
The mountain once marked the boundary between the historical regions of Savoy and Dauphine, with ancient stone markers still visible on the slopes. This frontier held geographical and political significance for centuries in the Alpine region.
Local hiking groups organize regular guided expeditions, maintaining the mountaineering traditions of the French Alps region.
The hike starts from the hamlet of Les Varvats and covers roughly 9 kilometers with approximately 850 meters of elevation gain to reach the summit. The trail is well-marked and passes through different elevation zones offering resting spots along the way.
During the ascent, hikers pass through dense beech and spruce forests before reaching the Chalet de l'Alpettaz at approximately 1540 meters. This mountain shelter provides a welcome rest stop and opens up views of the surrounding peaks.
