Place de l'Obélisque, Protected monument in Port-Vendres, France
The Place de l'Obélisque is an octagonal square in the center of Port-Vendres with a granite monolith and decorative fountains around its edges. The overall layout shows a symmetrical arrangement that organizes the urban space and connects multiple pathways.
The square came into being between 1754 and 1763 as part of urban development in Port-Vendres under King Louis XV. This building phase shaped the current structure of the harbor center.
The square reflects 18th-century French thinking through its balanced octagonal form and classical elements. People use it today as a meeting place and rest spot in the center of the harbor.
The square is within walking distance from the harbor via the main street and sits centrally located. Parking spaces are found in the adjoining lanes and side streets around the square.
The square holds one of the few remaining original obelisks from the 18th century in southern France. The structure was made from pink granite sourced from local quarries in the region.
