Îlet Oscar, Private islet in Le François, France
Îlet Oscar is a private island off Le François with an oval shape that rises approximately 40 meters above sea level. The islet features several beaches with fine white sand and houses a small boutique hotel along with historic structures.
The island is named after Auguste Viviès, the mayor of Le François at that time, and was settled and developed over the years. A colonial wooden house was built in the 19th century and later moved to its present location.
The islet served as a dwelling place for indigenous peoples, and their traces remain visible among the older structures today. These archaeological remnants connect the place to the deeper history of the Caribbean.
The islet is accessible only by boat, with the crossing from Le François harbor taking around 10 minutes. Two landing piers on the island allow for safe arrival and departure of visitor and supply boats.
The island contains the remains of an 18th-century limestone kiln that reveals how lime was once produced for construction and other uses. This structure blends into the vegetation and tells of the skilled trades that once thrived on Caribbean islands.
