Pointe de Bellegarde, Mountain summit in Giffre Range, France
Pointe de Bellegarde is a mountain summit in the Giffre Range located in the Haute-Savoie department of the French Alps. The peak rises to approximately 2,500 meters and forms part of a chain of alpine ridges with rocky terrain and open slopes typical of the region.
The peak has been climbed by mountaineers since the 19th century as part of early Alpine exploration in the Giffre Range. Routes were gradually developed and improved with safety equipment to make access to the summit more manageable.
Local shepherds have traditionally used the surrounding alpine pastures during summer months, maintaining centuries-old practices of seasonal livestock movement.
The hike to the summit takes several hours and passes through forest paths followed by open alpine meadows with gradually steeper terrain. The route includes sections with fixed chains for safety, particularly useful on wet or icy surfaces.
Nearby sits Lac des Chambres, a mountain lake where small chunks of ice float even during warmer summer months. This surprising feature results from the lake's depth and position, which keeps water cold enough to preserve ice year-round.
