Roche Jaille, Mountain summit in Vanoise massif, France.
Roche Jaille is a mountain summit in the Vanoise massif reaching 2689 meters, located between the Tarentaise and Maurienne valleys in the French Alps. The peak sits at the boundary of these two important valleys and provides views across the surrounding ridges and valleys.
The mountain served as a crossing point between villages in both valleys, where shepherds historically drove herds to summer pastures. These traditional routes shaped the network of paths that visitors use across the region today.
Local shepherds maintain the mountain pastures around Roche Jaille during summer months, continuing centuries-old Alpine farming practices in the Vanoise region.
The route begins from Saint Michel de Maurienne, passes through Villard Bernon and Beaune, with parking available near the forest trail entrance toward Plan Villard. The terrain is rocky and demands sturdy footwear and careful footing throughout the climb.
The summit area is covered with loose scattered rocks, a formation called clapier that makes the ascent technically demanding. This rocky terrain requires focused climbing and is quite different from standard mountain trails.
