Lac des Montagnès, Mountain lake in Mazamet, France.
Lac des Montagnès is an artificial lake situated in the Black Mountain range at 680 meters elevation. The water body stretches across the landscape with a stream flowing through it, surrounded by forested slopes.
The lake was created in 1934 to supply water to the towns of Mazamet and Aussillon. Over time it became an important resource for the surrounding municipalities.
The lake serves as a gathering space where locals and visitors spend time together in nature. People come here to relax, swim, and enjoy outdoor activities away from town.
A walking path circles the lake and offers good orientation for exploring the area. Parking and picnic spots are available, and supervised swimming areas operate during summer months.
The lake serves three distinct functions at once: it supplies drinking water to nearby towns, protects wildlife as a designated natural area, and welcomes swimmers and boaters. This triple role is not immediately obvious when you visit.
