Suspendu Glacier, Alpine glacier in Tignes, France.
Suspendu Glacier is a hanging glacier located at about 3100 meters on the mountainside of Tignes, characterized by prominent white ice formations. The glacier's surface creates a striking feature of the high alpine landscape and reveals the rugged terrain of the upper peaks.
The glacier formed during the last ice age and has shaped the alpine landscape of Tignes since then. Over the past century, the ice has retreated markedly and shows the effects of climate change on the high mountain region.
Local mountaineering groups organize regular expeditions to the glacier, teaching visitors about alpine environments and geological formations throughout the seasons.
Visitors can reach the glacier from July through August using the Perce-Neige funicular from Val Claret followed by cable car access. It is important to wear weather-appropriate clothing and suitable footwear, as conditions at elevation change rapidly.
The glacier's meltwater feeds into Rosolin Lake, whose water level is regulated through complex drainage systems. This infrastructure is necessary to protect the valley communities downstream from the hazards created by glacial lakes.
