Tignes, Ski resort in Savoie, France
Tignes is a ski resort in Savoie, France, spread across multiple elevations in the Tarentaise Valley. The area connects several villages and offers access to runs of varying difficulty and a glacier skiing zone.
An old village was abandoned and flooded by a reservoir in the 1950s, leading to the foundation of a new settlement higher up the mountain. Winter tourism grew rapidly from the 1960s onward, as lifts and hotels were built.
The glacier serves as a training base for professional freestyle skiers and snowboarders, often visible during the season. Off-piste terrain and terrain parks draw winter sports enthusiasts who want to practice techniques beyond groomed runs.
Most accommodations and restaurants line the main road connecting the different villages. Visitors planning to reach the highest point should bring warm clothing, as wind and cold can be felt even in summer.
The Grande Motte glacier allows skiing in July and August, when most other Alpine resorts have no snow left. An underground funicular provides access to the glacier plateau without relying on drag lifts or chairlifts.
