Zrkinyants St. Gevorg

St. George's Church sits at the foot of Narikala fortress and displays Armenian architectural features with stucco-covered brick walls and a cruciform layout. The building shows traditional structural characteristics typical of Armenian religious construction.

The church was founded in the 13th century, though some sources point to even earlier origins. Over the centuries it became an important center of Armenian religious life in Tbilisi.

Inside, religious artworks from different periods decorate the walls and spaces, including frescoes, icons, and stone crosses with Arabic inscriptions. These pieces reflect how many traditions have layered themselves over time in this place.

The church is easy to find by walking through Old Tbilisi's narrow lanes with the fortress visible above you. Visiting in the morning or late afternoon often means fewer crowds in this part of the old city.

The tomb of Armenian poet Sayat-Nova is buried inside, making it a meaningful site for Armenian cultural memory. His presence gives the place importance beyond its role as a house of worship.
