Babaneuri State Reserve, Protected area in Kakheti Region, Georgia.
Babaneuri State Reserve is a protected natural area in the Kakheti Region featuring forests, alpine meadows, and river valleys across approximately 862 hectares. The landscape spans elevations from 380 to 1,100 meters (1,250 to 3,600 feet) at the foot of the Greater Caucasus Mountains.
The reserve was established in 2003 to protect a significant forest grove discovered in 1946 along the Alazani River. These trees represent ancient plant species that survived from the Tertiary period.
The reserve serves as a research station where scientists study how forests and rivers interact in mountain regions. Visitors can observe monitoring equipment and research activities that help protect these natural spaces.
Access to the reserve requires special permits and is restricted to educational activities and scientific research that do not disturb the natural environment. Plan visits in advance as entry conditions are strictly regulated.
The reserve contains the largest surviving grove of Zelkova carpinifolia trees in the country, with some specimens reaching 30 meters (98 feet) tall. This tree species was once widespread across much of Europe and Asia but is now extremely rare.
