Ilulissat Icefjord

Ilulissat Icefjord stretches from Greenland's ice sheet toward Disko Bay, filled with massive floating icebergs broken away from the Sermeq Kujalleq glacier. The waterway spans roughly 55 kilometers and presents a constantly changing landscape of water and ice.

The fjord gained UNESCO World Heritage status in 2004, recognizing its importance for understanding how climate and glaciers have changed over time. This designation marked its value as a place where scientists can study natural processes shaping our planet.

Local communities continue to fish and hunt in these waters using methods passed down through generations, adapting their approach to the constantly shifting icebergs. This way of life shapes the rhythm and character of the settlements that dot the fjord's shores.

Visitors can walk marked trails along the fjord's edges or take boat trips to see the icebergs up close. Summer brings milder weather and longer daylight hours, making it the ideal season for exploring this landscape.

The glacier produces vast quantities of icebergs each year, with some reaching great heights before breaking apart in shallower waters. This constant generation and fragmentation of ice creates an ever-changing scene that looks different with each visit.
