Ilulissat Icefjord, Protected fjord in Avannaata, Greenland
The Ilulissat Icefjord extends 55 kilometers from the Greenland ice sheet to Disko Bay, containing massive floating icebergs from the Sermeq Kujalleq glacier.
The fjord received UNESCO World Heritage status in 2004, marking its importance for understanding climate patterns and glacial movements throughout recorded history.
Local Inuit communities maintain traditional fishing and hunting practices within the fjord waters, adapting their methods around the constant movement of icebergs.
Visitors can access designated hiking trails along the fjord's edge or take boat tours to observe the 40-meter daily progression of the fastest-moving glacier.
The glacier produces 20 billion tons of icebergs annually, with some reaching heights of 1 kilometer before breaking apart in the shallower waters.
