Melville Bay

The Greenlandic name Qimusseriarsuaq comes from traditional dog sledding expeditions that took place here for centuries. This connection to Inuit transportation methods remains part of local storytelling today.

The best time to navigate these waters is from mid-August through September, when icebergs and fast ice are less abundant. Visitors should prepare for changing Arctic conditions and prioritize water safety.

The bay contains a remarkable collection of small islands between Cape York and Cape Melville, including Meteorite Island with distinctive geological features. These island groups offer unusual formations that visitors often overlook.
