Melville Bay, Protected bay in Avannaata, Greenland

Melville Bay extends 300 kilometers in length and 100 kilometers in width, reaching depths of 1000 meters along the northwestern Greenland coast.

The bay became a designated protected area in 1977, marking a significant step toward preserving its marine environment and Arctic wildlife populations.

The Greenlandic name Qimusseriarsuaq means 'the great dog sledding place', reflecting centuries of traditional Inuit transportation methods in this region.

Maritime navigation through Melville Bay remains limited to mid-August through September, when the waters contain fewer icebergs and reduced fast ice.

The waters contain numerous small coastal islands between Cape York and Cape Melville, including Meteorite Island with its geological formations.
