Moria refugee camp, Refugee camp in Mytilene Municipality, Greece
Moria is a camp for displaced people in Mytilene Municipality on the Greek island of Lesvos, located about three miles from the port city of the same name. The site sits at the edge of Moria village and is enclosed by olive groves and barren hillsides.
The site was established as a registration and accommodation center during the migration movements starting in 2015. Multiple fires in September 2020 destroyed the structures and led to a complete reconstruction under stricter conditions.
The camp population represented multiple nationalities and backgrounds, with residents from Syria, Afghanistan, and various African countries creating distinct community groups.
Access to the site is heavily controlled and permitted only to residents and certain aid organizations. Visitors without official clearance cannot enter, and security is maintained around the clock.
The surrounding olive grove, known informally as Moria jungle, became an extension of the camp where residents constructed temporary shelters from pallets and tarps.
