Paimio Sanatorium, Tuberculosis sanatorium in Paimio, Finland.
Paimio Sanatorium is a tuberculosis treatment building in Paimio, Finland. The structure consists of several white concrete wings with large windows and open balconies, all arranged to maximize natural ventilation and daylight.
Alvar and Aino Aalto designed the building after a competition in 1929 and the facility opened in 1933 as a medical center. Over the following decades the use gradually changed and the building now houses a rehabilitation center for children.
The name refers to the town of Paimio in southwestern Finland and the original medical function of the building from the 1930s. Today the center is recognized as an example of Finnish modernist architecture and attracts professionals from many countries.
The center is located about 29 kilometers (18 miles) from Turku and guided tours are available only by advance reservation. The surroundings are quiet and surrounded by forest, making a visit on a clear day advisable.
The rooms have washbasins with a special water flow that is quiet and does not disturb patients while resting. The lighting and color scheme were specifically developed to protect eyes during long periods in bed.
