Huttalan linnavuori, Archaeological hillfort in Kaarina, Finland
Huttalan linnavuori is a hillfort in Kaarina featuring steep slopes on most sides except for its gentler southeastern edge. The summit rises about 74 meters above sea level and shows evidence of ancient settlement and fortification on its slopes.
The hillfort served as a defended settlement in two separate periods separated by centuries of abandonment. Archaeological excavations on the slopes have revealed remains from both the pre-Roman era and the late Iron Age.
The site held importance as a settlement during the Iron Age, with remains showing how people lived and worked on the slopes. The ritual cup marks carved into the rock suggest spiritual practices that were meaningful to the inhabitants of that era.
Access to the site begins from the parking lot at Kehityksen Kerhotalo, followed by a short walk on a gravel path to the trailhead. Sturdy footwear is advisable since the slopes are steep and the paths cross uneven ground.
A large glacial erratic boulder on the site bears a striking resemblance to a prehistoric stone axe, blending natural geology with archaeological intrigue. This natural formation may have held special meaning for the ancient inhabitants.
