Holy Cross Chapel, Modernist chapel in Turku Cemetery, Finland.
The Holy Cross Chapel is a modernist chapel in Turku Cemetery with three separate burial spaces. The largest space seats 160 people and contains organs with a total of 16 sound sets.
An architectural competition held in 1963 led to architect Pekka Pitkänen's design, with construction completed in 1967 on the cemetery grounds. The building emerged as part of a broader rethinking of how funeral spaces should be designed.
The chapel shows a modern approach to religious architecture through its use of large windows that flood the interior with natural light. The concrete surfaces and open spatial design reflect a contemporary Finnish perspective on prayer and remembrance.
The chapel is located within the cemetery grounds with areas for ceremonies, coffin reception, and technical facilities. Visitors should be aware this remains an active space for funeral services and ceremonies.
The entrance hall features a bronze sculpture called "De profundis" by Essi Renvall, the only artwork inside the building. This piece creates a reflective moment as visitors cross the threshold into the sacred space.
