Pääskyvuoren linkkitorni, Communications tower in Turku, Finland
Pääskyvuoren linkkitorni is a concrete telecommunications structure standing on Pääskyvuori hill in Turku. The tower reaches a height of 134 meters and tapers from a base diameter of 18 meters down to 12 meters at the top.
The Post and Telegraph Office constructed the tower in 1964 to handle international television broadcasts and telecommunication links. The facility served as a relay hub for data exchange between Finland and other countries at that time.
According to local stories, the tower served as a relay point for the direct communication line between the White House and the Kremlin during the Cold War.
The interior contains 500 steel steps leading to the top, but the elevator has been removed. Access to the observation platform is therefore not possible at present.
Although the structure remains the second tallest television tower in Finland after Pasila, the current operator Telia uses only the lower 40 meters for antenna equipment. The rest of the construction stands largely empty and serves no technical function anymore.
