Ylläs, Mountain summit in Kolari, Finland
Ylläs is a mountain summit in the Kolari region standing 718 meters above sea level. It forms the central point of Finland's largest ski resort with 63 slopes spread across the area.
The transformation of Ylläs into a winter sports destination started in the 1950s with the construction of initial ski slopes and lift systems. This development gradually established the area as one of northern Europe's major winter recreation centers.
The mountain connects two traditional Lappish villages on opposite sides of the fell. Each settlement has preserved its own way of life and customs.
The best way to arrive is by night train from Helsinki to Kolari station or through Kittilä Airport, situated about 30 minutes away by road. Proper preparation for winter weather and warm clothing are essential for an enjoyable visit to this mountain area.
The mountain houses the world's only sauna gondola and Finland's highest year-round gondola lift system. These technical features make a visit here an unusual experience in the Arctic landscape.
